A bold commitment to vision
Lions International is dedicated to improving the lives of people with visual impairment and fighting the major causes of preventable and reversible blindness.
The Canadian Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centre program was officially launched in 1996.
The Calgary Correctional Centre was the one of the first sites to get involved in the program. The Alberta government supplied the facility, a correctional officer and volunteer offenders.
They received, sorted, sanitized and repaired the eyeglasses for shipment to people in developing countries, free of charge. The experience provided the offenders with an opportunity to contribute in a meaningful way to the global community.
